5 homes lost, two owners still homeless
June 27, 2026
This is the story of one of those homeowners. It was just another ordinary day. Kevin was not home, he was out volunteering for Toys for Tots. He received a call: “Your house is on fire!” In one day, everything he owned, gone in a flash, left in the ash. He was uninsured. He needed help.
The damage ran deep
Kindness In Motion called in volunteers, not knowing if it could be saved. It was too hard to tell. Plumbing melted, joists burned completely, fixtures melted off the walls.
Volunteer Day: a huge thank you to all those that came and contributed! They stripped the damaged drywall, cleaned out the insulation and helped to uncover the mystery underneath. A huge thank you to Brent Neil Tile! Volunteer Day ran from 7am to 1:30pm, when Papa's Got Jerk's food truck showed up and fed all the volunteers. Thank you Cheryl!
At the end of the day, walls were stripped down to the studs. Thank you Service King Restoration and Mr Rooter Plumbing, for all your efforts! Unfortunately, the home was determined to be a loss.
That was a month ago. The fire was two months ago
He is still displaced. He still has no home of his own. He has still not found a path forward. We are not leaving him there. It is time to do something about it.
What it takes from here
- Permits. The city has to sign off before anything is touched.
- Disconnect. Power, water, sewer and gas made safe by licensed trades.
- Demolish and haul away. A machine, a truck, a crew, and a day.
- Level the lot. Graded, compacted, and the tie down points set.
- Bring in a single-wide. The biggest piece by far. Space on the lot only allows a single.
- Connect and finish. Trades back in, inspected, skirting and steps on, and he has a home.
Volunteer
You do not have to take the whole thing on. Nobody is. These are the people we need. If you are one of them, or you know one, that is the fastest way this moves.
Machines and the people who run them
- Excavator operator
- Skid steer operator
- Dump truck driver
- Demolition crew
- Grading and dirt work
- Transport company for the new home
Licensed trades
- Electrician
- Plumber
- Gas fitter
- HVAC technician
- General contractor to pull permits and keep the order straight
Finish work
- Skirting, steps and handrails
- Drywall and paint
- Flooring
- Landscaper to put the yard back
No trade, still useful
- A free Saturday and a pair of hands
- Someone to feed a work crew
- Someone who knows a dealer, a supplier, or a program we have not thought of
Donate
Money and materials both count, and both go to the same place. Every line covered leaves more in the fund for the home itself.
The whole job runs somewhere between $70,000 and $135,000, and the home itself is most of that. Any amount goes straight at it.
Things we need
- A single-wide home, donated, discounted, or sold at cost
- Gravel and fill
- Piers, anchors and tie downs

You will receive a tax receipt. Kindness In Motion is a registered nonprofit.
These things do not go away when the fire is put out.
